Praveen Kumar is our taxi wallah. He is from a village in Himachal Pradesh and says he is ‘about 30’. He has a wife and a little boy and girl, but has had to leave them at home to come to the big city to make a living. Praveen makes approximately 300 rupees per day, about $6 or £3, well above the average Indian wage. He spends about a quarter of this on the upkeep of his taxi, an ageing Hindustan Ambassador. The rest he sends to his wife and children. He plans to stay in Delhi ‘as long as he has to’. Much of the money he sends home goes towards tuition for his children. He wants them to have a good education so they will get better opportunities.
