I was going to blog about visiting the gardens at Rashtrapati Bhavan - the Indian President's House today. (In a nutshell, great summer flowers, nice fountains, no water/cameras/food allowed inside; and fascist security men who bark at children).
But then I came home and saw the images of Japan on TV. I covered the aftermath of the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004... scenes of devastation and displacement. Sad to see it again - but heartening that Japan was so incredibly well prepared! I was explaining to Kavita, our ayah, what had happened... the earth's tectonic plates, earthquakes, how the Himalayas were formed... tsunamis, Japan... She took it all in wide-eyed, asking questions. Finally, she said, "Didi, please switch off the news or I won't be able to sleep tonight."
If only everyone in Japan could switch off the images too....our prayers are with them.
