Here in India, when you want to protect something precious ...like a home, business, car, baby or blog (!)...from ill-wishers, you put up an evil-eye-averter, like the one at left. Notice the lemon and green chillies strung on the bottom for luck.
Here's one good description of the 'evil eye': "A thought that seems intrusive or invasive or has the power to hurt someone. The bad fortune that results is considered to have been caused by envy."
Another averter you often see is a black beauty spot on baby's faces. And my favourite...
